A woman was arrested in Butterworth for allegedly killing her boyfriend after an argument over a cigarette at the Skiet informal settlement, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the 34-year-old woman allegedly stabbed her boyfriend on Thursday night.

“The 32-year-old boyfriend was stabbed on his upper body and died instantly. Police were informed of the murder and rushed to the scene of crime where they still found the suspect at the scene,” he said.

“The initial investigation of the police led to the arrest of the suspect who is the girlfriend of the deceased. Police were reliably informed that the motive for the murder is that the deceased allegedly failed to give the suspect a cigarette so that she can smoke.”

The knife the woman allegedly used to stab her boyfriend was found at the scene.

She was expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
