Butterworth youth arrested for robbing woman of cellphone

Butterworth police have confirmed the arrest of an 18-year old suspect in connection with the alleged robbery of a 34-year old woman on Tuesday.

In a statement, police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the woman was returning home from a church service at around 18h00, when she was approached by three suspects, who robbed her at knifepoint of a cellphone worth R1 500.

Manatha said a motorist who noticed the robbery took after the suspects and managed to take down the youth, in whose possession the cellphone was found. Police are still searching for the two other offenders.

The youth was subsequently handed over to police and is expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrates’ Court on Thursday on a charge of armed robbery.
