BY CHARL BOSCH - JUNE 15, 2015

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has confirmed that a botched cable theft attempt resulted in an unexpected power cut that left most of Central without electricity.

In a statement, Municipal Spokesperson Roland Williams said that a substation serving the area blew just after 10h00 following an apparent breach of its security perimeter. A single suspect was reported as having been taking to hospital for burn wounds although its remains unknown as to his condition or whether he acted alone.

Power to the affected areas has since resorted after an outage of 90 min. A case of cable theft has been opened.
