Cancelled NMB State of the Metro Address no surprise - DA

BY CHARL BOSCH - MARCH 16, 2016

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay has described Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan’s decision to cancel his State of the Metro Address, as no surprise given the “growing list of broken ANC promises in the Metro”.

In a statement, party caucus leader Retief Odendaal said the cancellation comes at a time when “bold and decisive” leadership is needed to address the Metro’s escalating unemployment rate and service delivery troubles, instead of leaving residents without answers from government.

“[Under] Mayor Jordaan, [the ANC} has neglected to fulfil its promises, which is the failure to deliver weekly refuse collection in every ward by October 2015, establish a Metro police force, wage a war on water leaks, eradicate the more than 30 000 bucket toilets and rectify the more than 40 000 poorly built RDP houses,” Odendaal said.

“The cancellation of this important scheduled meeting is an abandonment of urgent issues and of the people, who deserve answers for the ANC's failure to deliver”.

Last week, members of the party, as well as the Congress of the People (Cope) and United Democratic Movement (UDM), walked out of a special council sitting after accusing the ruling party of failing to provide them with any information following a prolonged caucus meeting.
