Case against alleged Plettenberg Bay sex offender withdrawn

The Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court has withdrawn the case against a local handyman accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year old boy in a school bathroom, due to a lack of evidence.

Local media reports that the 34-year old man, who was arrested on June 8th after reportedly assaulting the boy while doing repairs at the school, had been on parole for attempted murder and assault at the time of the incident.

In passing her verdict, state prosecutor Henriette Breedt said a consultation by the regional court with the child, indicated that a successful prosecution would not be possible, and that it was decided to have the case dropped.

The suspect is expected to remain in jail and would have to re-apply for parole after it was revoked by the Department of Correctional Services.
