Case against Port Elizabeth cops accused of aiding a murder suspect's escape postponed

JUNE 2, 2015

The case against two Port Elizabeth cops, who stand accused of aiding and abetting a female murder suspect to escape from police custody, was postponed to July 9 when they appeared in the New Brighton Magistrates on Monday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, told a local radio station that one of the suspects, a 53-year old Warrant Officer, will be investigated internally by SAPS. He was released as it emerged in court that he was not directly involved with the escape of 28-year old murder suspect, Lungiswa Tsenge, who is still at large.

Meanwhile, the other police officer, 58-year old Sergeant Mandlenkosi Mthakama, faces charges of corruption, aiding and abetting a suspect to escape from police custody and defeating the ends of justice.

Mthakama was arrested at Kwazakhele police station.
