Cell prep for Oscar denied

The Department of Correctional Service has denied a report by Eyewitness News that it is preparing a single cell in the most secured section of the Kgosi Mampuru Central Correctional Centre in Pretoria for Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, which also houses Czech fugitive, Radovan Krejcir.

“Any insinuation that the department has prepared a cell to incarcerate anyone who has not yet been sentenced to a jail term is both malicious and irresponsible,” department spokesman Adv. Mthunzi Mhaga said.

According to the report, six cells are located in the section with Krejcir being the only suspect housed there as he is deemed a high security risk. The section is believed to be highly guarded by members of the prison’s special task force and that access is strictly controlled.

North Gauteng High Court Judge Thokozile Masipa is expected pass final sentencing tomorrow after closing arguments on Friday, with the State calling for an effective 10 years behind bars, while the defence has asked for three years correctional supervision and community service after the Blade Runner was found guilty of culpable homicide last month for shooting his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his Silver Lakes estate home on Valentine's Day last year.
