Cheeky’s tenure as EPRU President postponed

BY MARC JACOBSON - FEBRUARY 1, 2016

Eastern Province Rugby Uniion (EPRU) President, Cheeky Watson, has dodged another curve ball as his future tenure as President has been delayed until the end of February.

Watson was expected to face a vote of no confidence on Saturday, but after disrupting confrontations, proceedings were delayed.

Certain club delegates were barred from the gathering and as a result, a meeting was decided to be held on February 28th on which audited financial statements, as well as Watson’s position as the franchise president will be discussed.

Watson faces significant circumstantial threat from club opposition and stakeholders in the cash-strapped province.

The annual meeting was attended by delegates from SA rugby, led by deputy president, Mark Alexander and members from the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

Contracted players who are not a part of the Southern Kings squad, run by the SA Rugby Union, have not been paid since September 2015, and as a result the EP Rugby Union faces threats of liquidation.

The special meeting will be held on Sunday 28th of February, the day after the Southern Kings kick off their disrupted preparations to the Super Rugby against the Sharks at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
