Chilli Boys cancel out Ajax onslaught

BY MARC JACOBSON - MARCH 3, 2016

Chippa United forced a 1-1 draw against Ajax Cape Town with both teams cancelling each other out at Athlone Stadium, Cape Town, on Tuesday night.

Prince Nxumalo scored the opening goal of the match for Ajax in the 29th minute, before Rhulani Manzini levelled the scores – scoring a goal in the 60th minute.

Many chances went begging for both sides in the opening quarter of the match, with goalkeepers from either side being significantly untroubled on defence.

Ajax broke the ice when a deflected pass from Tashreeq Morris to Nxumalo’s left foot slotted the ball into the nets, beating Chippa goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, for his 11th goal of the season.

Chippa came close to responding in the first-half when a strike from Manzini soared just over the crossbar directly from a free kick soon before the interval.

There was little at stake as the second-half got off to a slow start with either side posing insignificant threat.  The scores were then levelled with an opportunistic attack from Chippa, as Manzini pounced on a poor giveaway at the back, before slicing inside their last defender and then slotting the ball home past the keeper into the top right corner of the goal posts.

Much to Akpeyi’s relief, Nxumalo almost reclaimed the lead for Ajax, but his shot went just wide of the target. Following the missed opportunity, the Cape side continued to apply pressure to Chippa’s goals, but had failed to execute and resulted in the match being forced to a draw and Ajax were then left to pick up the pieces for their efforts.

The result denied Ajax a place in the top eight of the PSL ABSA Premiership log, while the Chilli Boys remain in sixth place.

Chippa United’s following PSL ABSA Premiership fixture will be against Maritzburg United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on March 19th.
