Chippa go down to Wits in Dobsonville

BY MARC JACOBSON - NOVEMBER 3, 2016

Bidvest Wits hosted Chippa United in Dobsonville on Tuesday night due to the risk of protest action at the Wits University and had beaten the visitors 1-0 in their ABSA Premiership encounter.

The scores were levelled 0-0 at half-time, but Wits were unfortunate to not grab the lead late in the first half when a powerful shot on target by Malawian international striker, Gabadinho Mhango, got thwarted by Chippa keeper, Daniel Akpeyi.

The Clever Boys’ however found some redemption early in the second half when Mhango scored the to-be match winning goal, when he headed the ball home from a cross from Elias Pelembe. This ended up being the consolation score for the match.

Chippa almost scored when Katlego Mashego capitalised and intercepted a poor back-pass from Wits’ Thulani Hlatshwayo, but could only slot the ball into the outside side net for his efforts.

Following the win, Wits move to the top of the ABSA standings on 16 table points after six matches, while the Chilli Boys drop to eighth on nine table points after seven games.

Chippa United are set to play their next match on 19th November at home against Cape Town City in their eighth encounter.
