Clampdown on taxi violence in Mthatha lands six behind bars


Police in Mthatha have confirmed the arrest of six suspects and seizure of a number of weapons and drugs as attempts to clampdown on taxi related violence in the area intensifies.

In a statement, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said police carried a number of raids as part of Operation Vulindlela in the early hours of Thursday morning, leading to the arrest of the suspects, as well as the recovery of two pallet guns, one AK47, four Z88 pistols, three knives and a large quantity of drugs consisting of dagga mandrax. Traffic fines worth R22 300 were also given to drivers of various offences.

“Successes achieved during operations are a step closer to ridding our communities of crime. High police visibility is achieved through these operations which makes our community members feel safe,” provincial police Commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshingas said.
