Coega/ECDC Conducting Provincial Skills Audit

OCTOBER 28, 2014

The Coega Development Corporation and Eastern Cape Development Corporation have carried out a provincial skills audit “in line with the high impact/strategic infrastructure projects earmarked for the province”.

ECDC states in its annual report that the study focuses on selected sectors, specifically alternative energies such as nuclear, wind, solar and hydro, as well as agro-processing and tourism.

ECDC states that at the end of the last financial year, the study was 95% complete “with only the implementation and resourcing plan outstanding.

It says that in view of the growing demand for skills in the renewable energy sector, and in the light of the five renewable energy projects in the Eastern Cape worth R8.6 billion, ECDC has joined forces with the East London IDZ to establish a Renewable Energy Training Centre.

ECDC says it is envisaged that the availability of trained people in this sector will “encourage local and foreign investors to invest in the Eastern Cape”.

It adds that the success of the centre “will also position the Eastern Cape on the renewable energy map and create momentum for further activity in the province”.

It says an analysis of the study reveals “the potential of an unfolding green economy to lead to job creation, adding that approximately 98 000 new direct jobs could be created in the short term, 255 000 in the medium term and 462 000 formal economy employment opportunities in the long term." - MetroMinues.
