Cofimvaba police have arrested five suspected hijackers in connection with the robbery of a supermarket in Lady Frere on Saturday.

Speaking in a statement, spokesperson Colonel Gcinikaya Taleni said the men were arrested in Cofimvaba Town yesterday afternoon, after police noticed a suspected vehicle. The men had allegedly entered the supermarket at 08h25, before ordering staff to open the cash register and safe. They made off with an undisclosed amount of cash without any shots being fired.

Taleni said police also confiscated four firearms, of which three had their serial numbers filed off, ammunition, cellphones and bags with documents and cloths.

The men are expected to appear in the Lady Frere Magistrates Court tomorrow on charges of the possession of illegal fire-arms and ammunition, as well as suspected stolen property.
