BY TAI CHISHAKWE - SEPTEMBER 25, 2014

The MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the Eastern Cape (COGTA-EC), Fikile Xasa has noted with disbelief the destruction of property including municipal buildings in a violent service delivery protest at Sundays River Valley Local Municipality (SRV).

Cogta EC condemns any form of violent protest which manifests itself in the destruction of property and infrastructure.

“We call on our communities and leadership in particular to resist any temptation to resolve service delivery issues through violent and destructive methods. Negotiations and constructive engagement should be the hallmark of resolving any challenges we face as a country,” said MEC Xasa.

Cogta-EC calls on law enforcement agencies to track down the perpetrators of this unlawful act in the name of service delivery protest so that they can have their day in a court of law.

The department will send a team of officials to the stressed municipality to investigate the cause of the protest action and find lasting solutions.
