CoGTA to investigate Linda Mti's appointment as NMB security boss

JUNE 7, 2016

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday welcomed the announcement that Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC, Fikile Xasa, has agreed to the DA's request to investigate the appointment of Linda Mti as the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro's Safety and Security boss.

"The agreement by MEC Xasa to investigate Mti, confirms the DA's suspicion that Linda Mti’s appointment is irregular and unprocedural and may be illegal because he is a convicted criminal," said Athol Trollip, the DA's NMB Mayoral candidate in the upcoming local government elections.

"Under [Mayor] Danny Jordaan, the NMB government is ignoring the Municipal Systems Act, which is a violation of the law.

"Until the MEC’s investigation is completed, Mti must be suspended from Nelson Mandela Bay. Mti cannot serve in high office, overseeing safety and security across the Metro, while his appointment is so clearly irregular and unprocedural, and is now the subject of a government investigation."

Trollip said that he has now written to Mayor Jordaan, and Acting Municipal Manager, Johann Mettler, giving them reasons to immediately suspend Mti.

"The people of Nelson Mandela Bay deserve better than a head of Safety and Security who is irregularly and improperly appointed, who is a convicted criminal and who is at the centre of a billion rand fraud and corruption scandal. And the people of NMB deserve better than a Mayor who will break the law to appoint his criminal pals," he said.

"Linda Mti must be suspended immediately, and MEC Xasa’s investigation must proceed without fear or favour – when it is complete it will reveal that Danny Jordaan has irregularly forced through the appointment of his criminal pal, Linda Mti."
