Corporate conferencing: Get your message across in style

BY GRAEME LUND - JULY 8, 2015

Not so long ago, the Eastern Cape lagged behind the bigger provinces, particularly the Western Cape, KZN and Gauteng, when it came to offering modern and large-scale conferencing facilities. This is no longer the case, mainly thanks to the flagship International Convention Centres at the Boardwalk, in Port Elizabeth, and at the Premier Hotel, in East London.

Still, there is a wealth of smaller, but no less efficient, conference facilities in the region that cater for all manner of business conferencing needs. Business Link spoke to the managers of some of these venues to find out what they have to offer and what differentiates them from the rest of the market.

Faith Bada, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) Events Manager says; “The NMMU’s North Campus has its Up-Market Theatre for conferences of up to 160 delegates as well as two other smaller venues for training or seminars. There is also a restaurant that can seat 150 diners, from business breakfasts to evening banquettes.  For larger groups, we make use of our Auditorium which accommodates 650 delegates cinema-style. Mantis Collection’s No5 Boutique Art Hotel is situated in the upmarket, beachfront suburb of Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth.  Robyn Elford, Mantis Marketing Communications Executive, says; “Only a 10-minute drive from the PE airport, our hotel offers ten luxurious suites that are adorned with magnificent works of art by local artists. We offer conferencing and we have two very unique rooms, the first being our Mountbatton Theatre that is, in effect, a small movie theatre but is also ideal for lecture-theatre-type presentations.

“The second is the chic and exclusive Executive Boardroom which can host up to 10 people and is fitted with the latest state-of-the-art communication equipment including video conferencing, tele-conferencing and Wi-Fi access. The boutique hotel has made it a top priority to ensure guests with business interests can hold meetings without intrusion.” Contact: 041 502 6000.

Jacqueline Austin, Sales Manager at Hemingways Casino and Conference Centre, says; “Hemingways is the ideal venue for all conferencing, banqueting, eventing and wedding functions. Ideally situated in East London, just off the N2 highway, The Venue @ Hemingways can cater for groups of between 10 and 780 guests. The Southern Sun Hotel also offers 108 beautifully-appointed rooms to facilitate overnight accommodation.” Contact: 043 707 7777.

Situated on the edge of the Baakens Valley and overlooking Settlers Park in Port Elizabeth, The Venue @ 1 Prospect Road, provides a uniquely peaceful and natural surrounding for a conference. Sonja Douglas, the owner, says; “We are ideal for conferences and bosberaads for groups of up to 65 people. We offer an air-conditioned conference facility with all the necessary amenities including an overhead data-projector as well as on-site catering, braai facilities and plenty of parking space.” Contact: 082 446 0795.
