COUNTRY-STYLE RETREAT: Zuurberg Mountain Village: a great all-season family destination
As unconventional as it may sound, winter escapes into the African bush can be as magical as summer time vacations. Yes, it may be a little frigid, but the incredible game views and low tourist numbers, makes it absolutely worth it. This, I found out on a recent escape to Zuurberg Mountain Village.
Situated above the mountains of the same name, the 153 year-old historical establishment is without a doubt one of the best destinations for quick weekend retreats for PE residents. From its tranquil mountaintop haven, along an old wagon trail, you can enjoy magnificent 360º views of the Addo Elephant National Park and the surrounding indigenous countryside.
I found that the hotel offers rich elegant comforts and ambience from a bygone era in the Zuurberg Manor with its nine rooms - each featuring a full bathroom, mini-bar and a private patio. Alternatively, you can relax and unwind in one of Zuurberg’s Edwardian Village Cottages set in beautiful gardens, each sporting two private patios, underfloor heating topped with a Blackwood finish, and a freestanding bath with in-and outdoor hot/cold shower.
Winter weekends at Zuurberg are always special with crackling fires, sherry, delectable traditional country cuisines as well as memorable family times. The hotel also offers a Classic 5-course Carvery or Table d’hôte and a legendary Traditional Sunday Carvery. Guests still travel from afar to indulge in this gourmet experience!
Their Woodifields Bar, named after the engineer of the Zuurberg Pass, is one of the few remaining genuine English pubs in the country.
After feeding your appetites, you will find that there is plenty to do at the hotel. There are tennis courts, a kiddies playground area and a Spa offering a selection of specialised treatments which will leave you feeling rejuvenated and stress-free. In the summer months, after soaking up on the hot sun, you will certainly love a dip in the hotel’s large swimming pool.
Those seeking more adventure can follow hiking and horse trails and enjoy bird watching. Additionally, the hotel offers exciting games drives into the Addo Elephant National Park and surrounding game reserves. During the winter, the bush is usually far less dense which makes it much easier to spot game.
Zuurberg Mountain Village is highly recommended for couples, families or anyone looking for a great weekend getaway within immediate reach of PE. It is also an ideal destination to celebrate a wedding or other special occasions and their conference facilities are perfect for corporate retreats.
