A 42-year old crewman is said to be in a stable condition after suffering a heart attack on-board a ship travelling from Iraq to Cape Town.

In a statement, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) East London station commander Geoff McGregor said the life stock vessel, Ocean Blue A, triggered an emergency call for medical assistance in the early hours of Wednesday morning, some five nautical miles off the East London coast.

“The patient was found to be in a stable condition and suffering a suspected mild heart attack. He was taken on-board the sea rescue craft Spirit of Lotto and brought to our sea rescue station in the Port of East London, [before] being transported to hospital by an EMS ambulance,” McGregor said.

The boat later carried on with its voyage to Cape Town.
