DA Eastern Cape calls for an end to recurring burglaries at New Brighton Clinic

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape has urged the East Cape Department of Health to seek advice from the Western Cape Department of Health immediately before health services in the province "collapse and patients die from a lack of care".

According to Celeste Barker (MPL), the DA's Eastern Cape Shadow MEC for Health; "On Thursday, the New Brighton Clinic was burgled and vandalised for the fourth time."

She said that in an "action replay" of previous burglaries, thieves again stole copper piping from the geyser and hot water spewed out into the dental side of the clinic.

"The consequences of the burglary are that dental services will not be available until repairs have been completed and that patients in pain will either have to endure lengthy waiting times or travel further until repairs have been completed," described Barker.

"Given that the Department of Health had its main administration building attached last week and that further legal action is pending, the future does not look rosy.

"Our people deserve the same level of compassion and service as the people in the Western Cape. A caring government prioritises the safety of its people."
