DA must get rid of Kohler-Barnard - ANC

BY CHARL BOSCH - OCTOBER 15, 2015

The African National Congress (ANC) has reportedly called on the Democratic Alliance (DA) to fire its former Shadow Minister of Police, Dianne Kohler-Barnard, with immediate effect.

Kohler-Barnard was demoted to the position of Deputy Shadow Minister of Public Works last week after sharing a post by freelance journalist Paul Kirk on Facebook that contained the line, “Please come back PW Botha – you were far more honest than any of these ANC rogues, and you provided far better services to the public”.

She later admitted to not having read in the post entirely and only became aware after being informed via SMS by DA KwaZulu-Natal leader Zwakele Mncwango. Although she deleted the post, a screengrab later leaked onto twitter, resulting in a severe backlash with reactions also coming from party leader Mmusi Maimane and Western Cape Premier Helen Zille.

“I have no idea who would choose to share it via Twitter,” she told News24 in an interview two weeks ago, adding that the decision to share the post was “incredibly stupid”.

Last week, she pleaded guilty to misconduct and bringing the party into disrepute following a three disciplinary hearing attended by defence attorney Barry Roux. No further details were revealed.

Speaking to The Citizen, ANC Spokesperson in the Office of Chief Whip Stonze Sizani, Moloto Mothapo, said the only sanctions needed were for the party to dismiss her.

“We believe the applicable sanction for this particular conduct should be expulsion from parliament. She must not continue to serve in parliament, which is founded on the vision of the democratic constitution,” he said.
