DA NMB accuses Jordaan of “using public funds for political gain”

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay has accused Executive Mayor, Danny Jordaan, of following in President Jacob Zuma’s footsteps by putting the interest of government before those of the people.

In a statement, DA Metro Caucus leader Retief Odendaal said Jordaan’s attending of an ANC event in Kensington on Thursday evening, which the party claims was paid for using taxpayers’ money, illustrates an abuse of power and “public funds for political gain”.

“Mayor Jordaan attended the event, which did not aim to serve the people of Nelson Mandela Bay, with a full complement of bodyguards on overtime, in two Mayoral vehicles,” Odendaal said.

“As we have seen with the proposal to increase the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip’s staff complement by over 40 people, and now with the use of public funds and municipal resources at political events, it is clear that Mayor Jordaan has abandoned his duty to serve the people of NMB”.

The latest criticism comes after 200 former ANC, Congress of the People (Cope) and Agang SA members defected to the DA on Tuesday, in a move described by the party’s provincial leader Athol Trollip, as conformation of resident “having had enough of the ANC-led government”.

“These members who crossed to the DA have had enough of Mayor Jordaan’s closed-door policy and distant governance,” Trollip said, before branding the SAFA boss’ ongoing silence regarding the Metro’s lingering sanitation crisis, as “arrogant”.
