DA NMB councillor faces suspension over misuse of funds

FEBRUARY 16, 2016

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay has reportedly recommended that one of its councillors be suspended from all party activities for the next 18 months, after being found guilty of musing money from a discretionary fund.

According to reports, the party’s disciplinary committee on Monday ruled that Nico du Plessis had been using money fraudulently from an account meant for residents of Helenvale since last year. He however pleaded not the guilty on a charge of misconduct and bringing the party into disrepute.

In a statement, the party said its Provincial Executive Committee would make a final decision on the recommendation within the next two weeks. Du Plessis is reportedly expected to remain on as a councillor.
