DA NMB to take legal action over municipal manager’s “golden handshake”

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay have announced that it would be taking legal action against former municipal manager Mpilo Mbambisa, over the alleged approval of a golden handshake he received from Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan.

In a statement, party Caucus leader Retief Odendaal said Mbambisa was facing numerous charges relating to financial misconduct, and that this acceptance of the agreement shows a disrespect for the country’s constitution.

He also stated that the latest payout had brought the total amount paid to dismissed managers and city officials to R10-million, which could have been used for the replacing of bucket toilets in Walmer Township.

“The municipality has chosen to not respect the rule of law and test the allegations against Mbambisa in court, but rather to financially reward his misconduct,” Odendaal said.

“South Africa sees all too often how the ANC recycles cadres – appointments are made for political loyalty rather than skill, then when an appointee fails to perform, the cadre’s indiscretions are ignored for ages, and when they can’t be ignored, the individual is moved sideways with a large payout.

“The ANC cannot unnecessarily waste more ratepayers’ money to deal with the devastating consequences of political interference in the appointment of government officials,” he concluded.
