DA officially launches bid to win Nelson Mandela Bay

SEPTEMBER 12, 2015

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is expected to officially launch its 2016 Mayoral campaign for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality at the Donkin Reserve, in Central, Port Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon.

The official launch, which will be attended by DA leader, Mmusi Maimane, and the DA's 2016 Mayoral candidate for the NMB, Athol Trollip, among other party leaders, will outline the DA's vision? for the Nelson Mandela Bay.

Several door to door campaigns have been held in some Port Elizabeth townships in the lead up to this day.

The DA is determined to win the Metro from the African National Congress (ANC), which currently only enjoys a marginal majority - holds 62 out 120 seats, in the Nelson Mandela Bay Council.

The stakes are high for the both parties as a win in the Metro may open doors for the DA to extend its governance into the Eastern Cape - while the ANC is determined to prevent that from happening.

A little over 100 days, the ANC replaced then NMB Mayor, Ben Fihla, with South African Football Association (SAFA) boss, Danny Jordaan, in a bid to turn things around and win the confidence of the electorate.

While the winner will be decided at the polls, one prominent political analyst has observed that the ANC was vulnerable in the Bay.
