Department of Social Development to create awareness on Community Nutrition Development Centres

JULY 12, 2016

The Honourable MEC for Social Development Mrs Nancy Sihlwayi will lead a road show in Kruisfontein Civic Center in Humansdorp to create awareness about the Department’s food nutrition programme called Community Nutrition Development Centre (CNDC) and the Winter Feeding Programme on Thursday, 14 July 2014 at 10:00.

The Winter feeding programme is planned to start on the 11 July to 30 august 2016 in Sarah Baartman District, Nelson Mandela Bay, O.R Tambo, Chris Hani Municipality, Alfred Nzo, Joe Gqabi, Buffalo City and Amathole.

A special visit by the honourable MEC will be done in Sarah Baartman and O.R.Tambo to engage vulnerable communities on strategies of escaping from abject poverty.

The Department had  put together action plans to deal with the high level of poverty eradication in the Eastern Cape by instituting centers (CNDCs) where people will go and eat nutritious meals every day.

In the center the community is taught and encourage to produce vegetables that will be used to feed themselves in the center and also, life skills and other Social Work intervention programmes. The CNDC programme is the first in the country and was launched last year on October in Cookhouse.

The caring Department placed high priority on establishing an explicit Anti-Poverty Strategy which outlines an ultimate goal to eradicate poverty. The Department has a Provincial Integrated Anti-Poverty Strategy which is evidential to the priority of eradicating poverty on Government agenda.

The continued mandate of eradicating poverty and hunger is informed by a number of multinational declarations that include amongst others: The World Food Summit (1996), Millennium Development Declaration (2000), International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1966), United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights (1948), Voluntary Guidelines to achieve the progressive realization of the right to adequate food (2004), African Union Declaration on Agriculture – NEPAD (2010), SADC Declaration on agriculture and food security (2004), Maputo declaration (2003) etc.

The objectives of the roadshow are to:

  • Provide services to vulnerable groups within society in order to prevent and respond from hunger.
  • Create awareness of CNDC and winter feeding programme in a form of Provincial MEC outreach programme on the identified districts.
  • Mobilise and strengthen community-based responses for the care, support and protection.
  • Advocate for the creation of a supportive environment and address the root causes of hunger by empowering young people, women and all vulnerable groups.
  • Promote sustained institutional mechanisms in communities and ensuring safe individuals, families and communities in our society.
