Despatch residents apprehend robbery suspect - three accomplices escape

A 29-year-old robbery suspect is expected in court on Monday after he was apprehended by Despatch residents and later handed over to the police on Sunday morning, he, together with other suspects, robbed a shop in the town.

"Today [Sunday], at about 11:30, four armed suspects entered a shop in Despatch and threatened the shop assistants with a firearm. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash, airtime and groceries and fled on foot," said local police.

"Alert community members gave chase and apprehended one suspect, retrieved some groceries and handed the suspect and stolen items over to the police.

"A vehicle, a white Mazda Rustler bakkie, that was allegedly used in the commission of the robbery, was found nearby, and it was impounded."

The 29-year-old suspect was detained and will appear soon in the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court on a charge of business robbery.

A task team was set up in order to follow up all leads and to track the three outstanding suspects.
