Driver crams 50 inside taxi

Patensie police have arrested a 31-year old taxi driver who reportedly transported 50 school children in his vehicle on Wednesday.

In a statement, police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, said Lieutenant Loaan Steenkamp was heading to work when he noticed a white Toyota Quantum driving recklessly at high speeding. Having noticed children inside, he immediately ordered the driver to stop.

Swart said Steenkamp ordered the passengers out of the vehicle at which point, 50 children, aged six to twelve, were counted as having been inside the Quantum licensed to carry 15 people.

The driver is expected to appear in the Hankey Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on a charge of reckless and negligent driving as well as overloading.
