Driver who crammed 50 kids in Quantum sentenced

AUGUST 11, 2015

A 31-year-old taxi driver from Patensie, who was arrested for cramming 50 school children into his Toyota Quantum less than a week ago, has been fined R5 000 or six months in jail.

Hyron Bruintjies was sentenced on Tuesday by the Hankey Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to a charge of overloading.

Lieutenant Loaan Steenkamp was heading to work when he noticed a white Toyota Quantum driving recklessly at high speed.

Having noticed children inside, he immediately ordered the driver to stop.

When Steenkamp ordered the passengers out of the vehicle, he found 50 children, aged six to twelve, had been in the vehicle, which is licensed to carry 15 people.

The State had withdrawn the charge of reckless and negligent driving against him.
