Limpopo police say two women are expected to appear in the Musina court on Tuesday after they were arrested on Sunday with heroin manufacturing chemicals worth R8 million at the Beit Bridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Police spokesperson, Ronel Otto, says two women are a 39-year-old Zimbabwean and a 23-year-old from Lesotho, were carrying 18kg of ephedrine.

Ephedrine is similar in molecular structure to the well-known drugs such as methamphetamine (also called meth, crystal, chalk, ice or tik among other terms) and epinephrine (adrenaline). It is legal to possess in South Africa but under prescription only. It is a known ingredient for drugs such as heroin.

Otto says the two women were trying to cross the border by foot.

They were intercepted by custom officials, who found the drugs after searching their luggage.
