Drugs worth almost R12 000 seized in Butterworth

Police in Butterworth have confirmed the arrest the 29-year old man after drugs worth just under R12 000 was found in his possession.

In a statement, police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the man was arrested in the Yako Informal Settlement around 06h00 on Sunday, after being tailed by intelligence.

He added that police, on closer inspection, found 197 mandrax tablets worth R11 820, as well as an unlicensed pistol and three rounds of live ammunition inside the house the man was staying. Ballistics tests on the pistol are expected to be conducted soon in determining whether it was used for crimes in the Butterworth area.

The suspect appeared briefly in the Butterworth Magistrates’ Court on Monday with charges against him including the possession of an illegal and ammunition, as well as the possession of drugs.
