Drunk driver killed in EC accident

A truck driver, said to be under the influence of alcohol, has been killed in an accident on the R-61 in Eastern Cape early on Thursday morning.

The accident took place on the R-61 highway between Port St. Johns and Lusikisiki. The wreckage resulted in the driver’s body being trapped in the vehicle – by which the ‘jaws of life’ had to be used to free.

Provincial Traffic Spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, confirmed in a statement that the driver lost control of the vehicle around a bend in the road.

“The vehicle, transporting bricks from Durban, lost control around a bend and rolled down an embankment. The driver was killed, while the passenger in the truck was slightly injured,” Bramwell said.

“The driver was intoxicated and empty beer cans were found in the wreckage,” he added.
