DSG Junior nature nerds come in third

NOVEMBER 2, 2016

They did it! The Nature Nerds from DSG Junior grabbed third prize in the finals of the Enviro Quiz competition that took place at the Gariep Dam Forever Resorts this past weekend.

All their hard work of growing a vegetable garden, putting a display together, preparing a 10 minute oral, as well as writing and choreographing their own environmental song, earned them their place in this competition.

"It was a gruelling weekend for the girls, where not only did they have to present their display, oral and song, but they also had to participate in a debate regarding fracking in South Africa, where they had to argue as the government official on this controversial topic," said Cherié Wille, Communications Officer at the school

"They also did a practical activity in permaculture (the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient), in the hot Free State sun. Finally, a quiz was to be taken by the team, showing all they had learnt about sustainability since the first round of the competition."

There was also fun to be had though, where the girls enjoyed (okay, maybe not as much as their teacher!) a “bokdrol” spitting contest.  Some free time at the pool was also a great way to unwind.

"We are very proud of these six girls, and congratulate them whole-heartedly on their achievements."
