Dutywa man sentenced to life behind bars for 2014 murder

A 31-year old man from Dutywa in the former Transkei was sentenced to life behind bars on Friday for the rape, robbery, kidnapping and murder of a 19-year old woman in August two years ago.

In passing its verdict, the Mthatha High Court found that Luthando Qwele visited a crèche owned by the mother of Lutho Qudalele in Ngcingwana Village near Dutywa, where after a missing person’s reports was filled at the Dutywa Police Station.

A herd boy later found her body floating in the Nqabarha River a few kilometres from her home, with witnesses identifying Qwele as being in the area at the time of Qudalele’s disappearance. Police later traced him to Butterworth where he was arrested just over a month later amongst hawkers in the town’s central business district.
