BY YOLANDA PALEZWENI - OCTOBER 18, 2016

The Butterworth Regional Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced 23-year-old, Siyanda Mgushelo, to 18 years behind bars for raping a 14- year-old girl at Sheshegu Location, in Ngxakaxha Village, Dutywa.

It is alleged that, the accused was known by the victim and her family as he used to visit the family.

According to the police, on the 5th of June 2015, at about midnight, Mgushelo went to the home of the victim at Sheshegu Location, in Ngxakaxha Village, Dutywa, and knocked on the victim’s door.

The victim, who was with her two siblings, aged between 3 and 7 years old, asked for the identity of the person, who was knocking and the accused identified himself.

“The victim opened the door for the accused as he was known by the family. He knew that the mother of the children was in Mthatha and he wrongfully and unlawfully accosted the victim by dragging her to a different room and then raped her, and left the scene,” said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

He added that, the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigated that case and the convicted was traced and arrested.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Stanley Sibidla, welcomed the sentence and warned other rapists that they will be arrested and given stiff sentences.
