Dutywa police are looking for the relatives of a 32-year-old man who was killed during an exchange of fire between police and hijackers on Sunday morning at Ezithenjini Location,  in Dutywa.

According to the Eastern Cape police, they received information that a Toyota Run X with registration HJY393EC was hijacked in Mdantsane township outside East London and was seen around Dutywa.

"Police spotted the vehicle along the N2 outside Dutywa and gave chase. Police tried to pull the vehicle over but the driver did not stop.

"The occupants of the vehicle started to fire shots towards the police van and the police retaliated which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle," the police said.

"Two of the occupants from the suspects’ vehicle managed to escape but a third occupant (the deceased) was found at the back seat of the car already dead with bullet wounds on his upper body."

No SAPS member was injured during the shootout.

The deceased is estimated to be 32 years old. He was wearing a whitish trouser, grey skipper, black hoot, white socks, grey and navy takkies with white stripes.

"We appeal to anyone who can assist in identifying the deceased to contact Dutywa SAPS on 047 489 1333," the police said.

"Dutywa SAPS have opened an inquest docket for further investigation."
