Dutywa residents protest over poor services

JANUARY 28, 2015

Residents of Govan Mbeki Township in Dutywa, in the Transkei, on Wednesday embarked on a protest over poor roads, water and sanitation.

Reports suggest that the protestors could be joined by taxi operators who also complain about poor maintenance of roads leading to the township, especially after heavy rains.

Residents are complaining that interruptions in water supply have become a daily occurrence.

A recent study by the University of the Free State researcher, Dr Sethulego Matebesi says maladministration, poverty and lack of accountability are the main causes for the recent increase in service delivery protests around the country.
