East London man arrested for stealing R32 300 belonging to a stokvel

NOVEMBER 18, 2015

East London police arrested a 27 year-old man at his home in the city's Perffervile suburb on Tuesday after a stokvel's money went missing at his workplace.

"It is alleged that one employee, who is the member of the stokvel used to keep the member’s contributions in a box hidden in the ceiling," police said.

"Police interrogated the suspect, who then took them to his home where he had hid the money. An amount of R26 900 was recovered out of R32  300 that went missing."

The SAPS would like to warn members of the public especially stokvel members to avoid keeping large sums of money in their possessions during this time of the year as these types of crime tend to be on the increase.

Cambridge Station Commander, Brig. Nomso Siganga has encouraged the public to approach the police for assistance towards their cash safety when they divide their contributions during this Festive season as cash robberies are on the increase.

The suspect was expected at the East London Magistrate Court on Wednesday facing charges of theft.
