East London police arrest five men for robbery and murder

Inyibiba detectives embarked on tracing operations following a spate of serious reported cases over the past weekend and arrested five suspects. In the first incidence, a family was robbed of their variables, which included cell phones and cash, by knife-wielding men on Sunday night at their home in Khayelitsha, outside East London.

According to Eastern Cape police, officers followed information and netted three suspects, aged between 20 and 30 years of age, they were charged with house robbery.

All three suspects, Daniel Ziwele (20), Vabantu Mki (24) and Sifungo Sifutha (30) appeared in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and were remanded in custody pending their bail application.   

"In an unrelated  case, two suspects, aged 24 and 27 years, were arrested in Mdantsane following the discovery of a man’s body with stab wounds along a street in NU13, Mdantsane.

"Information led the Police to the various areas where these suspects were hiding, of which one was arrested while preparing to flee to Cape Town," the police said.

The two, Zolani Gayiza (24) and Viwe Metele (27), appeared in the Mdantsane Magistrate Court on Thursday and were remanded in custody, pending their bail application. They are facing murder charges.

The Mdatsane Cluster commander, Major General Andre Swart praised the good work done by the team, more importantly that the arrests were effected soon after the crimes were committed.

“A special word of appreciation goes to the members of the community who played a significant role in this success,” said Swart.
