East London police nab fugitive robbery gang member

AUGUST 25, 2016

East London police have been lauded after an alleged member of an armed robbery gang that terrorised the city was arrested on Monday in possession of unlicensed firearm. The suspect had been on the run since 2009.

"Mdantsane crime prevention members, nabbed the dangerous Lonwabo 'King' Sigama (29) hiding himself at a house in NU-2, Mdantsane," police said.

"He absconded on a bail since 2009, following his arrest for business robbery in a jewellery store in NU-6 Mall, Mdantsane.

"They allegedly took jewellery and undisclosed amount of money. Police investigation has linked him to business robbery that took place in a well-known butchery in East London last year."

The suspect was also linked to numerous house robberies in and around Mdantsane. His accomplices had been serving their time in prison for the crimes they committed.

"We believe that, this is a major breakthrough that will help us solve these cases."

The suspect has since appeared in the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court for possession of unlicensed firearm.

Mdantsane police station commander, Brigadier Mhlobo Nkopo, commended his members for a job well done.

"We believe that this arrest will have a positive impact in decreasing our crime. This should be a warning to those who are involved in crime that, you can run but you can not hide for ever, " he said.
