Two East London’s schools - Hudson Park Primary and Gonubie High, have made it through to Top 10 finalists in a national singing competition Sing With Us – a great achievement considering that around 200 entries were received in this year’s competition from primary and high schools across South Africa.

Gonubie High School choir performed a stunning version of the international singer Beyonce’s songs, ‘Pretty Hurts/Halo’ while Hudson Park Primary School Grade 7 Girls choir performed a unique version of Pharell William’s ‘Happy’.

Both East London schools, representing the Eastern Cape, are now in the running for a grand prize of R100 000 in cash plus an opportunity to share a stage with a Grammy Award-winning musician, Pharrell Williams at a Woolworth’s private concert which will be held in September.

“This is the first time that Hudson Park Primary Choir has achieved such a top award. We are very grateful for this opportunity, having been selected as one of the Top 10 in South Africa,” said Hudson Park music teacher, Nathan Johannisen.

Gonubie High School is also very delighted at the opportunity.

The school’s Caron Wanliss said: “We are very excited and grateful for this opportunity as Gonubie High School.”

Top 10 finalists consist of primary schools and high schools from Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Garden Route region and KwaZulu Natal.

Pharell William will decide on the ultimate winning group and the decision will be announced on Wednesday, 26th of August.
