Eastern Cape Dept of Sport honours Madiba

BY ZANDISIWE POLTIN - OCTOBER 19, 2015

The Eastern Cape Department of Sport Recreation Arts and Culture (ECDSRA) on Friday announced that this year’s Heroes Marathon will take place on the 5th of December in Qunu - to celebrate the life and times of the iconic leader, Nelson Mandela.

Since its launch 16 years ago, this will be the first time that this international event happens on the day that Nelson Mandela died as it was previously held on the 16th of December annually.

“In 2014, MEC in consultation with Athletic SA (ASA) and other relevant stakeholders announced that the marathon from 2015 will be shifted from December 16, the Day of Reconciliation to December 5,” the Department said.

Also, this year’s run will start from Mthatha Airport to Qunu, as opposed to previous years when athletes had to run from Qunu to Walter Sisulu University stadium.

According to the Department, the number of participants has grown exponentially over the years.

“The number of athletes partaking in the event has grown from a mere 20 runners in 1999 and our target for 2015 is over 1 000”.

As with previous years, the event is expected to attract athletes from other African countries such as Malawi, Kenya, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe to mention a few.

The Department said that the Eastern Cape will also celebrate Eastern Cape’s political legends, and tenacious business and academic figures.

There are prizes to be won and anyone wishing to take part can go to all Sport and Recreation District offices and online www.heroesmarathon.co.za
