Eastern Cape murder fugitive arrested after ten years

JULY 9, 2015

An Eastern Cape man was arrested early Wednesday by the Durban Flying Squad, Inanda Crime Intelligence and Sydenham police after spending ten years on the run.

"In the early hours of yesterday, police stormed into a shack in Kennedy Road at Sydenham, armed with three warrants of arrest, searching for Lungelo Lennox Jama (39). Jama has been in the wanted suspects list from 2005.

"He was wanted for murder, rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm that he allegedly committed in Duncan Village in the Eastern Cape," police said.

"Jama fled his place of residence in 2005 to hide in the cluttered shacks in Kennedy Road, where he is believed to have been hiding ever since.

It is believed that he would often move from his shack to stay at his girlfriends’ as he was aware that ‘police were on his tail’.

"He was caught by surprise in the early hours of yesterday when police pounced and apprehended him. He was detained in Sydenham police station and will be transported to Duncan Village to face the consequences for his actions," polic said.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised police for apprehending the suspect.

“As the saying goes, crime does not pay. Let this be the lesson to others that, no matter how long the crime was committed, we will make sure that the perpetrator is captured and kept behind bars,” she said.
