Eastern Cape police hunt for cop killers, appeal for help

Eastern Cape police have appealed to the public for help with information that might lead to the arrest of suspects involved in the shooting and killing of a police officer during an armed robbery.

According to police, on Friday, at around 18:30, an off-duty constable based at Lady Frere SAPS witnessed an armed robbery in progress at the Spar in Cala. Six suspects were involved.

"The suspects fired shots and in order to protect customers, the constable placed himself on duty and intervened.

"The police officer was shot and fatally wounded," said Eastern Cape police.

"One of the suspects was also fatally wounded and the firearm he was using has been recovered."

The other suspects fled with cash.

“We will not be deterred in our determination to fight crime. We urge community members to work with us, in sharing information about crime and the whereabouts of criminals involved,” concluded Acting Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zamuthango Mki.
