Eastern Cape Premier Phumlo Masualle Leads MECs To Sarah Baartman District on Exco Outreach Programme

APRIL 15, 2015

The Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masualle, and all MEC's will be visiting the Sarah Baartman District Municipality from the 15th to the 17th of April as part of the Executive Council Outreach Programme. The theme for the outreach programme is “Together moving the Eastern Cape forward”.

According to the Premier, the main aim of the Exco Outreach Programme is to give an opportunity to the ordinary citizens to interact and raise their daily problems with the leadership of the area, including the Premier, MEC's, Mayor’s and Councilor’s.

“It is also aimed at promoting direct, two-way and unmediated communication with the leadership,” added the Premier.

The Exco Outreach Programme has become a trusted platform for the majority of communities who use them effectively in partnership with government in the fight against poverty and for a better life for all.

Critical challenges facing the District include severe water losses, severe bulk infrastructural challenges, lack of municipal maintenance budgets, ineffective billing systems, ineffective revenue collection (average only 10%), lack of availability of land for future development, conditions of roads, ICT challenges, ineffective ward committees and poor spending of Municipal Infrastructure Grant.

The Premier will meet various communities in the District. On the 16th of April he will meet  the communities of Cookhouse in the Blue Crane Route Local Municipality at the Community Hall at 18:00 in order to discuss issues relating to housing rectification, shortage of land for grave yards, shortage of water and sanitation.

At 10:00 on the 17th of April, the Premier will be meeting the community of Humansdorp in the Kouga Local Municipality to discuss challenges relating to lack of budget for maintenance of infrastructure, amongst other things.

Furthermore, the MEC of Treasury and Economic Development, Mr Sakhumzi Somyo, together with the Agrarian Reform MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, Sports, Arts and Culture MEC, Pemmy Majodina and MEC of Social Development, Nancy Sihlwayi, will visit Jansenville in the Ikwezi Local Municipality on the 16th of April to discuss a number of challenges, including access to social grants. The community meeting will take place at 18:00 at the Jansenville Community Hall.

At 10:00 on the 17th of April, the MEC for Cooperate governance and Traditional Affairs, Fikile Xasa, and the MEC of Safety and Liaison, Weziwe Tikana, host a community meeting with the residents of Moses Mabida in  the Sundays River Local Municipality to discuss instability within the municipality.

Community meetings will also be held in Alicedale in the Makana Local Municipality (16th of April at 18:00) and at the Uitkyk Centre in the Koukamma Local Municipality at 10:00 on the 17th of April. Contact the relevant local municipality for more information.
