Eastern Cape Provincial Freedom Day Celebrations held in Mbizana

Communities in Mbizana and surrounding areas came out in numbers to join in the Freedom day celebrations.

The Provincial event was held today at the birthplace of Oliver Reginald Tambo, Nkantolo, in the Mbizana area. The day also marked the launching of the OR Tambo centenary celebrations, which will take place throughout the year of 2017.

The activities of the Centenary Celebrations include a series of service delivery initiatives such as the official opening of the upgrading of the road that leads to Nkantolo, official launch of house construction project in the Village, provision of rural development essentials to the community, and launch/official opening of other service delivery initiatives in the area.

The campaign will also celebrate the lives of other legends of the Province and South Africa who were Tambo’s protégés. All these activities will culminate in the grand celebration of Tambo’s birthday on 27 October 2017.

Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masualle said it is time that the majority of the people contribute in building the Province's and country's wealth, without being limited to being labourers and dependent on Government, but participate as job creators as well.

He says bringing the Freedom Day celebrations to the birthplace of OR Tambo, was intentional in ensuring that people of the Province are reminded where they come from, reflect on the life and times of OR Tambo and what he stood for, as a freedom fighter.
