Eastern Cape scholar transport operators get stern warning

FEBRUARY 24, 2015

Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, has reportedly issued a stern warning to scholar transport operators who overload and use unroadworthy vehicles to ferry learners to school.

She led a roadblock together with traffic officials at the Mdantsane exit to East London to check compliance with roadworthiness and driver fitness. The route is known for road accidents that saw a number of learner deaths in recent months.

Tikana says operators who fix numbers and overload will be held to account.

"We want to warn the drivers, because if they have submitted incorrect information about themselves, we will terminate their contracts which states you are going to be allocated a number of learners which is equal to the capacity of your vehicle."

"In an instance here in Amathole, where a 14 seater has been allocated 70 learners guided by the information he submitted, so we are going to act on those that misinformed us," she told the SABC.
