EC boxer dies after first round knock-out


The Department of Sport and Recreation has expressed its sadness following the death of an Eastern Cape on Tuesday evening.

According to reports, Mzwanele Kompolo was knocked out in the first round by Siphenathi Qampim, where after he collapsed in the ring despite receiving treatment from doctors. He was later taken to a hospital in Butterworth before being transferred to Frere hospital in East London after falling into a coma.

“On behalf of my department, our heartfelt condolences to the family and everyone associated with the young athlete. I am confident that Boxing South Africa will do everything in its power to furnish us with all details,” Minister Fikile Mbalula said in a statement.
