EC Dept of Sport and Buffalo City remember Dr Rubusana

The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), together with the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM), will on Friday hold a memorial lecture of Dr W.B Rubusana in Mdantsane Indoor Sport Centre.

The lecture, which is part of the heritage month celebrations, will showcase the life and times of one of Dr Rubusana.

Rubusana was born in Somerset East and was a man with many talents. He was not only a political activist, but he was also a journalist, a teacher, and a minister just to mention a few.

In 1884, he transferred to East London after he was ordained as a minister of the Congregation Church.

The city then became his home for the rest of his life. He died at the age of 78 on the 19th of April in 1936.

“The Buffalo City Municipality community structures and political formations have on various public platforms lobbied government to restore Dr Rubusana’s grave that is in a very poor condition in East London and build a memorial to immortalize his massive and selfless contribution to the struggle for national liberation,” the DSRAC said in a statement.

“The DSRAC has a mandate to build public memorials dedicated to prominent national and provincial icons including politicians, traditional and religious leaders, academics, educationists, and community leaders whose massive contribution to politico-socio-economic transformation of the country’s landscape can never be over emphasized.”

This year marks the 157th anniversary of his birth.
