EC suspect shot over stolen cigarettes

Fort Beaufort police have shot dead a suspect wanted in connection with a series of robberies on vehicles belonging to British American Tobacco (BAT).

According to The Times, police Spokeswoman Colonel Sibongile Soci said the shootout occurred after officers spotted a suspect vehicle in the town.

“The members stopped the vehicle‚ searched it and found some of the alleged stolen tobacco products. Upon this‚ the suspect drew a firearm and started shooting at the police members on the scene‚” Soci said, adding that the man was fatally wounded minutes later.

Boxes containing cigarettes worth an estimated R100 000 was seized and an inquest docket handed over the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
