ECape Education Portfolio to visit schools after dismal 2015 Matric pass rate

JANUARY 12, 2016

Between Wednesday and the 22nd of January, the Portfolio Committee on Education of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature (ECPL) will conduct school visits to the Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City Metros as well as the Sarah Baartman, Aliwal North, Chris Hani, OR Tambo and Amathole districts.

"Annually, at the start of school calendar year the Portfolio Committee embarks on schools visit programme to various districts and metros," said Velisile Bukula, Media Officer at the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.

"Eight teams comprising of Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs), Legislature officials together with Provincial and District officials from the Department of Education will embark on this programme to assess the state of readiness of the Eastern Cape Schools."

He said that the Committee will focus primarily on the pressing issues such as the provision of Learner Teacher Support Materials (LTSM) and educator provisioning.

"The availability of learner-transport and school nutrition to qualifying learners and the state of school infrastructure will also form part of the focus. The Committee will also consider updates regarding the performance of schools on the matriculation examinations. All visits start at 09h00."

Honourable Fundile Gade, the Portfolio Committee on Education Chairperson said, “this programme will give us an opportunity to evaluate the turn-around plan of the department which they have just adopted with a view to assess whether it speaks to real issues constituting the fundamentals in the schooling system we have in the Province; e.g. the massive unviable and small schools."

He added; "We will also have to look at the curriculum diversification offered by schools whether it is in line with the key policy choices we have made as the Province in terms of human capital investment.”

In 2015, the Eastern Cape performed dismally and recorded the lowest Matric pass rate of  56.8% - down from 65.4% in 2014.
